DARIEN, CONNECTICUT

Darien, CT 06820, located on the “Gold Coast” of Fairfield County, Connecticut, is one of the most affluent towns in the United States.

CNN Money rated Darien as the # 2 town in the top twenty five for top earning towns in the country as well as one of the top ten towns of its size category in which to live.

The median home price is $1,220,000, population density is 1,525.2 per square mile and there is a median family income of $ 218,130.

Sandwiched between the cities of Norwalk and Stamford, with 20,200 people, Darien has become a bedroom community with few office buildings or industry.Ideally located on the shores of Long Island Sound, the town offers superb transportation to New York City, Stamford and the rest of the Connecticut shoreline and Boston.

The train trip to New York is about 50 minutes and the trip to Stamford is about five minutes. The Freeway, Route 95 and the Merritt Parkway which is just north of Darien, provide North/South access to the commercial centers of Bridgeport and Stamford as well as New York City. Once the railroad came to town in 1848, Darien became a residential suburb of New York and today 36.6% of residents have a commute which lasts longer than 45 minutes.

Settled in 1641, the first church was built in 1740 and Darien CT 06820 was incorporated in 1820. In the pre revolutionary days, there was a sawmill, a shipyard and blacksmith and several small farms and of course there was fishing and trading with small ships which put in along the beaches and docks.

During the revolution the town was raided several times my Loyalists who lived at Lloyds Neck on Long Island and prisoners were taken. The town was about evenly divided between those who were loyal to the crown and those who wanted independence. This led to more than one fight and the accusation that “spies” signaled the British when to attack.As with many of the towns in this part of Connecticut, the coming of the railroad changed the town completely.

Before 1848 there were barely 1,000 people in Darien who were traders, fishermen, shoemakers and small farmers. Once the railroad came and the Civil War was over, wealthy New Yorkers came to town building summer homes and then a few decided to live full time and commute to their jobs in the city. Today just about everyone commutes somewhere.

Darien offers a wonderful list of services to its residents and prides itself how well the town is run.Darien has the largest Little League Program in the country, three Boy Scout Troops and The YMCA provides a vast number of programs, classes and athletic opportunities. The DarienPublic Library consistently ranks in the top ten libraries in the country in it category.

In town there are 12 parks, two beaches, four Country Clubs, two yacht Clubs and a Hunt Club as well as 203 acres of ball parks, hiking trails and picnic areas.

There is easy shopping in town with trendy clothing stores, restaurants, convenience stores, grocery chains, automobile dealerships, antique stores and gift shops.

The “big-box” stores are a short drive to Stamford or East along Route 1. And of course you are only 50 minutes from the night life, shopping, theatre and culture of New York City.

The rest of Fairfield County with its beautiful open spaces, farm stands, hills, lakes and rivers are a short drive north. There is little that Darien does not offer to the discerning buyer and if it is not in town it is close by.
