About Greens Farms...

The lovely community of Greens Farms is the oldest neighborhood in Westport, Connecticut.

In 1648 five farmers, known as The Bankside Farmers, purchased land called Machamux, translated to “beautiful land” from the Pequot people. More land was bought from the Native Americans over the next 50 years.

The area’s name changed from Machamux to West Parish of Fairfield, and finally renamed to Green’s Farms, after John Green, one of the five Bankside Farmers.

The first schoolhouse, called West Parish Common, and the first meeting house are located on Green’s Farms Road. Today, this area is a small park with a monument called “Machamux Boulder.”

The Green’s Farms Church has celebrated more than 300 years in the community, having been founded in 1711. This was the site of the first local government as well as first place of worship in Westport. George Washington even visited the church during the American Revolution!

The Revolution led to troubled times in Greens Farms when British soldiers raided the neighborhood and destroyed several barns and houses, as well as burning down the meeting house.

Today, Greens Farms is a wonderful place to live or visit, with its plethora of beautiful homes and shops. Greens Farms is also home to the private day school, Greens Farms Academy. One of Westport’s public elementary schools, Greens Farms School, is located here as well.

Interestingly, Martha Stewart once owned property in Greens Farms on Turkey Hill Road.
