EASTON, CT 06612
Easton, Connecticut, is a small rural residential community surrounded by Redding, Munroe, Trumbull, Fairfield, Weston and Newtown. Located in Fairfield County Connecticut, one of the most expensive counties in the United States, this town of 7, 272 provides a unique rural living style close to the “Gold Coast” of Connecticut and not that far from the bright lights of New York City and the shopping Mecca of Stamford, Connecticut. ![]()
If you are looking for open spaces, lots of fields, farm stands, excellent schools and three acre zoning then Easton is a community you should consider. Settled in 1757, the town never grew quickly because the area is mostly rough hills along the Aspetuck River making farming difficult and
transportation slow. The only business that existed in the early years was a small button factory. No railroad was ever built through Easton, as it was through most of the other Fairfield County towns. Because of these conditions the town has no “Town Green” or even a main street. Easton was not incorporated until 1845. The population in 1900 was 960 people and did not exceed 2,000 until 1950. The population density today is 265.2 people per square mile, the median family income is $ 135,055 and the median house or condominium value is $ 796,972.
Today one half of the property is owned by Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut which supplies water to the nearby towns and provides a sound tax base to Easton. Turkeys, owls, coyotes, geese, deer, bears and other wild life are to be found in Easton.
There are a number of lakes and ponds to be enjoyed but do not expect a great deal of infrastructure. Tennis Courts are available at the local schools and of course there are miles of hiking and nature trails to be enjoyed. The 2009 Rockefeller Christmas Tree came from Easton and Helen Keller lived and died in her house in town. One of highlights of the year is The Fireman’s Carnival in July with its rides and slides.
There are farms a plenty! Easton has Maple Row Tree Farms, Silverman Farm, Aspetuck Farm, Snow’s Farm,
Lion’s Farm, etc…. Some have petting zoos, some are apple orchard farms, some are Christmas tree farms, and some are horse farms.
Easton is beautiful, quiet and rural but with that low key approach there are negatives. There are few stores in town, yes, you can get some things in the Easton Village Store – best stop for coffee in the morning! and you can mail a letter at The Post Office but if you need a loaf of bread at 11:00 PM you can’t get it in Easton. It will take you at least 15 minutes to drive on two lane back roads to find that loaf of bread, so you need to learn how to plan
your shopping day. Once to a shopping area, there are plenty of options whether it is food, clothes or hardware.
On the other hand, with all that shopping inconvenience, you get one of the best school systems in the State of Connecticut. The Easton schools constantly rank 10% to 20% higher than other Connecticut schools and when the systems were designated for excellence by the Federal Department of Education there was an upsurge of new home owners. There are three schools in town:
Samuel Staples Elementary School, Helen Keller Middle School and Joel Barlow High School, which is actually in Redding and is shared with Redding. There is also a private school, Easton Country Day.
The North/South Route 59 takes you to the Merritt Parkway which takes you to Stamford to the Southwest and Bridgeport to the Northeast. The commute to New York is not easy
with a drive south to the Railroad and then a one hour and a half train ride. Easton is a small residential town that offers a wonderful close community life style if rural is what you want. If you want tons of shopping in name stores then you should be ready to drive or live in a different Fairfield County town.
