In the early years of the Wilton Gardening Club the members planted trees on the Town Green and along Danbury Road. The Club members also marked nature trails, labeled trees, and distributed seed packets to children.

Recently, the Club has devoted much of their time maintaining many of the public gardens around town. These award-winning gardens are at the Post Office, Horseshoe Pond Park and the Veterans Memorial Green (at the intersection of Center Street and Old Ridgefield Road). The Club also designs the hanging baskets that are on town’s lamp posts and fills the containers on the steps of Town Hall with flowers. There is also the annual “Holiday Greening” tradition. The Club Members make wreaths which they hang on buildings throughout the town. Some buildings with these beautiful festive wreaths are The Wilton Library, Post Office, Town Hall and Comstock Community Center.

In addition to its garden-related activities, the Club is devoted to the care and preservation of Old Town Hall, which is located directly across the street from the Wilton Congregational Church. This commitment dates back to the early 1930s.

The Plant Sale has been held for decades every year in May on the Friday and Saturday before Mother’s Day. This is the Wilton Gardening Club’s major fundraiser which supports all of their events and activities throughout the entire year

In the late 70’s, Jane Micati came up with the idea of organizing “plant digs” in members’ gardens. At these digs, a group of Club members would meet at someone’s home and help them dig, divide, and pot up plants to be donated to the Plant Sale. This has become a huge and popular event. These digs also allowed Members of the Club to meet and work together. The Plant Sale has moved numerous times due to the outgrowing of space and is now held at the Town Green, in the center of Town at the Gazebo. Once the Greenhouse came along in 1986 the Club grows a significant percentage of plants to sale at the Annual Plant Sale. In the Fall, the Club accepts donations of cuttings and plants. These are used to create additional plants. The Club also still grows hundreds of plants from seeds.

By the time the date of the Plant Sale approaches, the greenhouse may explode with the voluminous amounts of plant material.

Don’t forget to attend one of these plant sales. Ask about the “Members Choice” plants.
