Short Beach is one of of the most appreciated beaches in Stratford, Connecticut, for its abundance of hang out places, picnic areas and fishing.
Adjacent to the mouth of the Housatonic River is Short Beach. This beach is well known for its recreation for all ages, including picnic areas, a calisthenics course, fishing, and playground. At the complex are also areas for golfing, softball, basketball, paddle ball, tennis, and volleyball. There is also a concession stand available at the beach for snacks.
There are also many animals that live at the beach. There are piping plover and least tern nesting areas in the northernmost section of the beach. These ground nesting birds need seclusion and a beachfront property to successfully reproduce. The horseshoe crab, whose ancestors date back 300 million years ago and today is considered a living fossil, also calls Short Beach home. This crab digs a nest in the beach during high tides. In the marine basin are snapper and bluefish available for catch and there are small sub-adult fish in the intertidal zone used as a food source for birds.
Located on the water, this town offers some affordable beachfront properties, as well as a boatyard and marina.
