While there are many older homes in and around  Wilton, the history behind 18 Forest Lane is quite unique. The builder, Walter Smith, was the preeminent architectural historian and building preservationist in the area, having renovated Ambler Farm, The Old Town Hall, Wilton Library, Cannondale Train Station and countless other buildings in and around Wilton.

Originally, Walt built the family home across the street from 18 Forest, and was the first house on the street, with land at 18 Forest being a garden and space for his daughter’s pony. After taking part in the construction of most of the homes on the street, Walt was faced with a new challenge. An early 1800’s home at the corner of Route 7 and Kent Road was slated to be taken down, as was a barn up in Bethel. Being the preservationist that he was, Walt took it upon himself to save these structures and with his team, painstakingly disassembled these buildings and joined them at 18 Forest Lane in the 1990’s

During the rebuild, Walt modernized the home, pouring an all new foundation and installing up to date mechanical systems, wiring, and plumbing to ensure the utmost comfort in the new house. Walt wanted everything to be the best because after the completion of 18 Forest, he planned to move in himself.

Today, in the home you will not only find the original 

floorboards and exposed timbers from the 1800’s home, but also custom cabinetry built by Walt himself and well maintained systems in perfect working condition. You’d be hard pressed to find a home with as much warmth and charm as 18 Forest Lane, or one so impeccably cared for. This house is move-in ready, and just waiting for you to make it your home.
