Located in downtown Norwalk, CT is the neighborhood South Norwalk. Originally called Old Well, South Norwalk was incorporated as its own city in 1870. In 1913, Norwalk and South Norwalk were consolidated to become one city.

Several buildings and areas in South Norwalk are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Beth Israel Synagogue, Haviland and Elizabeth Streets-Hanford Place Historic District, Norwalk River Railroad Bridge, South Main and Washington Streets Historic District, as well as the post office.
