About the Neighborhood

Sandy shores, local amenities, resort vibe!
Beachside community, vacation lifestyle!

Nestled between the gentle embrace of the Saugatuck River and the verdant expanse bordering Sherwood Island Park, the Compo Beach neighborhood of Westport emerges as a vibrant community enjoying the coastal charm and active living.

The pride of Compo residents is deeply rooted in the wealth of amenities that define their neighborhood. At the heart of it all is the dynamic Compo Beach Waterfront Park, offering not only an extensive sandy shoreline perfect for sun-drenched days but also a renowned skate park pulsating with energy. For quieter moments by the water, the serene Old Mill Beach provides a peaceful alternative.

Boaters benefit from the town-owned Compo Beach Marina, while the Longshore peninsula is a hub of activity with its esteemed Sailing School and a picturesque 18-hole golf course winding along the water. Nature lovers find refuge in the tranquil Mill Pond Nature Preserve.

Originally a coastal farming area, Compo began its transition to a summer resort around 1909, starting with the former David Bradley farm on the eastern side. Development continued with roads added to the west by 1919 and Appletree Trail in 1928. The beach area was equipped with recreational facilities like bathing areas, dancing pavilions, and a marina, but most properties had deed restrictions preventing hotels. This made Compo a popular destination for middle-class New Yorkers in the 1920s.

The Compo Beach Homes

The Compo area of Westport is characterized by a diverse range of homes, significantly defined by their proximity to water.

Waterfront living is a key feature, with residences including those with private docks along the Saugatuck River, beachfront properties in the Compo Beach, Hall Island, Old Mill Beach, and Compo Cove areas, and lakefront homes by the Sherwood Mill Pond.

The area also includes sought-after condo complexes such as Compo Mill Cove, Edgewater Commons, and Owenoke Park, highlighting the premium nature of real estate in this vibrant beachside community.

Beyond the immediate waterfront, the "mainland" section of Compo offers a different, yet equally appealing, residential experience. Further north from Compo Road, homes are often situated on larger lots adorned with beautiful gardens, mature trees, and frequently feature in-ground pools. In contrast, the area directly north of Compo Beach tends to have a more structured, grid-like layout with generally smaller lot sizes.

Architecturally, Compo presents a rich tapestry, from grand mansions to cozy bungalows. Predominant styles include Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Craftsman/Bungalow designs. A nod to the area's history as an agricultural community before its resort transformation can be seen in the few remaining 19th-century farmhouses.

Whether traditional or contemporary, these houses are integral to the fabric of a neighborhood that embodies coastal charm and provides a high quality of life for its inhabitants.

Compo Beach Lifestyle

Expansive beach, amazing views, resort lifestyle!

Drawing from its history as a summer resort community, the Compo area in Westport continues to offer residents a lifestyle rich in both relaxation and recreation amidst natural beauty.

Central to this is the 29-acre Compo Beach, a hub for activity ranging from sailing lessons and various water sports to casual picnics and a playground for children.

Beyond the immediate beach scene, the area provides access to cultural experiences at the nearby MOCA contemporary art museum and a vibrant local dining scene. For those seeking a quieter shoreline experience, the more private Old Mill Beach offers an alternative retreat.

Boating enthusiasts are well-catered for with access to two notable marinas. The town-owned Ned Dimes Marina, located within Compo Beach, provides both in-water slips and dry storage for a variety of small craft, including dinghies, kayaks, and windsurfers. Another option is the E.R. Strait Marina situated within Longshore Club Park.

The Longshore peninsula further enhances the active lifestyle, featuring the prestigious Longshore Golf Club, an acclaimed 18-hole waterfront course. Also on the peninsula, the Longshore Sailing School offers programs catering to both novice and experienced sailors, solidifying Compo's strong connection to water-based activities and maintaining its enduring resort-like atmosphere.
